DAMASCUS, (ST)- Indian Ambassador in Damascus Man Mohan Bhanot has stressed that the Syrians have proved to the entire world that they have strong determination to defeat terrorism, stressing that history and the world will remember the Syrian people’s sacrifices.
In a ceremony held recently by the Indian Embassy at the Ommaya Hotel in Damascus marking the 54th anniversary of lunching the “Indian Economic and Technical Cooperation Program”, Bhanot said that Syria has been a key partner of his country, clarifying that every year, some 90 trainees are sent to India to receive training in the country’s prestigious institutes. He expressed hope that Syria will benefit from this program in 2018.
“The Syrians are struggling to rebuild their country’s infrastructure, and here, the expertise acquired by the trainees who joined the program will be of great benefit,” he said.
Program Remained Active Despite Challenges
Minister of Higher Education Atef Naddaf told reporters that technical cooperation between Syria and India enhances the relations between the peoples of the two countries and boosts Syrian humanitarian resources. He thanked the Indian government for keeping the program active despite the difficult circumstances created by the crisis in Syria.
He noted further cooperation with New Delhi, particularly regarding scholarships in technical fields.
India Support for Syria Hailed
On his part, Faisal al-Mikdad, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs ad Expatriates, said Syria highly appreciates India’s support for Syria by keeping its embassy in the country opened and by assisting Syria to withstand the crisis.
“Despite the challenges and difficulties that faced Syria, India didn’t stop its economic and technical cooperation program. On the contrary, it stressed readiness to receive scholarships from Syria and to provide expertise to trainees in all specializations.
He pointed out that besides keeping its cooperation program working in Syria, India carries on building the Iron factory in the Syrian province of Hama despite the challenges caused by the terrorist war imposed on the country.
