Head of the EU delegation to Syria: We are ready to cooperate with the new Syrian government

DAMASCUS, Apr.12, (ST)-The Head of the European Union Delegation to Syria, Michael Unmacht, stressed the European Union’s readiness to cooperate with Syria and provide support regarding its priorities and challenges.

He referred to the fact that the new Syrian government wants the best for its citizens, unlike the former regime, which lacked a genuine desire to support the Syrians.

In an interview with Syria TV, Unmacht said: “The situation has changed for the European Union after the fall of the criminal regime. Official engagement with the new government is now underway, and regular meetings are held with its ministers. The European Union also views the Syrian government as an important step towards building a future Syria.”

He indicated that the European Union has changed the nature of its presence in Syria through shifting from a purely humanitarian level to direct political engagement with the Syrian government.

Regarding the sanctions imposed on Syria, Unmacht emphasized that the European Union “does not seek to harm the Syrian people,” stating that “individual sanctions will not be lifted, especially those related to crimes and violations.”

He also noted that humanitarian exceptions have been in place since the beginning of 2023, and will later be expanded to include the sectors of transportation, energy, and the central bank.

Unmacht added that the European Union is working in coordination with the UNHCR regarding the issue of displaced Syrians, emphasizing the important role of civil society organizations in Syria in this regard.
