Haitham bin Tariq al-Said sworn in as new Sultan of Oman

 MUSCAT, (ST)-Haitham bin Tarek bin Taymour al-Said was sworn in on Saturday as Oman’s new Sultan after his predecessor Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said passed away yesterday.

The new Sulatn vowed to continue the path of the late leader Qaboos bin Said and to maintain the principles of his foreign policy which had been based on peaceful coexistence among nations, good neighborhood relations , non interference in the internal affairs of other countries, respecting states’ sovereignty, enhancing international cooperation and seeking peaceful methods to solve disputes. Earlier, the Omani News Agency said that the country’s Council of Defense opened Sultan’s Qaboos’ will during a family meeting announcing that Haitham bin Tarek al-Said is the new Sultan of Oman.

 

The Omani TV reported that the funeral of the late Sultan Qaboos started in the Omani capital. The funeral procession started from Beit al-Baraka Palace and the funeral prayer was performed at “Great Sultan” Mosque. The late Arab leader will be laid to rest in the family cemetery.
