Hadi forms a leadership council from Riyadh and hands it over

On April 7th, the Saudi-backed resigned Yemeni President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi announced the formation of a presidential leadership council and then he  handed over his powers to the council.

“A Presidential Leadership Council will be established according to this announcement to complete the implementation of the tasks of the transitional phase, and I will irrevocably delegate the Presidential Leadership Council with all my authorities in accordance with the Gulf initiative and its executive mechanism,” Hadi said in a televised speech.

The new council will consist of eight members and will be headed by Rashad Al-Alimi, an advisor to Hadi.

Hadi assigned the new council to negotiate with the Yemeni government in Sanaa for a permanent ceasefire in Yemen and to sit at the negotiating table to reach a final and comprehensive political solution.

Hadi submitted his resignation to the House of Representatives and left Sanaa for Riyadh in 2015, but he quickly returned under Saudi pressure to Aden and announced his resignation.

The southern regions of Yemen witness frequent clashes between the forces of the Hadi government and the forces of the so-called Southern Transitional Council, which have resulted in many casualties.

On April 2nd, the United Nations announced a humanitarian truce for a period of two months in Yemen, according to which military operations would stop, with the opening of Sana’a International Airport for a number of flights, and the opening of the port of Hodeidah in front of oil ships.
