Guterres urges Washington to lift sanctions against Iran

Washington (ST): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the administration of US President Joe Biden to lift Washington’s embargo on Iran.

Reuters quoted Guterres as saying in a report to the UN Security Council that the United States should extend the exemptions related to the oil trade with Iran and renew the full exemptions for non-proliferation projects, adding, “I appeal to the United States to lift or exempt its sanctions, as agreed in the joint action plan that was reached between Iran and the 5+1 group in 2015.”

 

On May 8, 2018, former US President Donald Trump announced his country’s withdrawal from the nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1 group and the reinstatement of sanctions against Tehran in defiance of the will of the international community.
