Guterres: The credibility of the UN Security Council has been undermined following UNSC failure to stop the war on Gaza

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has today expressed his regret at the failure of the UN Security Council to take a decision to stop the Israeli aggression against the people of the Gaza Strip, stressing that the Council’s credibility has been severely undermined due to the Council’s delayed action regarding this war.

Agence France-Presse quoted Guterres as saying today during a forum held in Doha: “The credibility and authority of the United Nations and the Security Council have been undermined due to their failure to adopt a ceasefire resolution regarding the Gaza Strip, and the failure to reach a truce.”The UN Secretary-General strongly denounced the “geopolitical divisions” in the UN Security Council which failed to reach a resolution to stop the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip that has continued since October 7. Guterres stressed his continued efforts to call for calm and a ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons, and expressed regret at the failure of the Security Council in carrying out the tasks the UN is established to serve.

Guterres warned of the risk of collapse of the humanitarian health system in Gaza, as the situation is rapidly deteriorating into a disaster with potentially irreversible effects on the Palestinians as a whole, and on peace and security in the region. The day before yesterday, the United States thwarted a UN Security Council resolution to stop the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip by using its veto power against it during an emergency session of the Council.

This is the second time that the United States has used its veto during the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip. On October 18, the US thwarted a Brazilian draft resolution, and also obstructed two Russian draft resolutions to immediately stop the Israeli aggression, declare a humanitarian truce, and guarantee the arrival of humanitarian aid to the Strip.
