Guterres: The climate conference failed to develop a plan to reduce emissions radically

Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, confirmed that the Climate Conference (COP27) held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, failed to develop a plan to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expressing his regret for this.

“Our planet is still in the emergency department, and we need a drastic reduction in emissions now and this is an issue that this climate conference has not addressed,” Guterres was quoted by AFP as saying today.

The European Union also expressed its disappointment with the outcome of the climate conference.

“What we have is not enough as a step forward, nor does it bring additional efforts from major polluters to further and accelerate their emissions reductions,” European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said at the closing session of the conference.

The Conference of the Parties on Climate (COP27), which concluded today in Sharm El-Sheikh, adopted two main texts: the Final Declaration and a Resolution on the Financing of Climate Damage incurred by Poor Countries.

It also stressed the urgent need for an immediate, deep, rapid and sustainable reduction in global emissions of greenhouse gases responsible for climate warming.

The conference decided to establish a fund in the event of losses and damages, as well as to form a transition committee tasked with setting operational procedures for these new measures, including the special fund.

The recommendations were submitted for study and approval to the next Conference of Parties scheduled for the end of the year 2023 in the United Arab Emirates.
