Guterres: Israel’s ban on UNRWA will have devastating consequences for Palestinians

New York (ST)-UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that if Israel’s decision to prevent the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from continuing its work in the Palestinian territories is implemented, this will have devastating consequences for Palestinian refugees.

In a post on the X platform, Guterres called on the Israeli entity to act in accordance with the UN Charter and international law. He said that the legislation issued by Israel cannot change or alter these obligations.

He continued: “I draw the attention of the UN General Assembly to this issue, and I will keep the Assembly informed as the situation develops,” stressing that “there is no alternative to UNRWA.”

Guterres stressed the day before yesterday that the plight of the Palestinians besieged in the northern Gaza Strip is unbearable due to the ongoing genocide committed against them by the Israeli occupation forces.

In turn, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that the Israeli entity’s decision against UNRWA would lead to devastating consequences.
