Guarantor Countries Vow Continuous Cooperation to Attain Political Settlement in Syria Based on UNSC Resolution No. 2254

ASTANA, (ST)- The guarantor countries of Astana process on Syria (Russia, Iran and Turkey) have renewed their commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. They urged avoiding any procedures that harm these principles or undermine the achievements of Astana process.

In a joint statement at the conclusion of the ninth round of Astana talks on Syria in the Kazakh capital on Tuesday, the three guarantors affirmed their determination to continue joint efforts aimed at advancing the process of political settlement in Syria based on UNSC Resolution No. 2254, through facilitating the implementation of the recommendations of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi and through holding joint regular consultations with the UN Special Envoy for Syria and with the Syrian parties.

 The statement stressed the guarantors’ resolve to continue the fight against terrorism until Daesh, Jabhat al-Nusra and al the groups, organizations and individuals, which have links to al-Qaeda and Daesh have been listed by the Security Council as terrorist entities, are eliminated.

The statement reiterated the importance of implementing the agreement on de-escalation zones in Syria which has played a key role in maintaining the cessation of hostilities regime. It stressed that the de-escalation regime is a temporary procedures which wouldn’t hurt the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria.  

According to the statement, the three countries agreed on enhancing efforts aiming to provide assistance to all the Syrians to restore normal and peaceful life through guaranteeing fast and safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the Syrian people.

The guarantors also asserted the need to exert more efforts as to consolidate confidence among all Syrian parties, the statement said.

They agreed on holding a meeting in June in Ankara for the work group concerned in the issue of releasing the abductees and searching for the missing people.  Besides, they decided to hold the next high-level International Meeting on Syria in Sochi in July 2018.
