Government, FAO discuss cooperation

DAMASCUS, (ST) – The Syrian government and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) discussed ways of enhancing cooperation during a meeting held between Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi and FAO representative in Damascus Abdulla Taher Bin Yehya, marking the end of Ben Yehya’s mission in Damascus.

The two sides agreed on exchanging expertise in the areas of scientific and agricultural research, livestock and fish breeding and dray zones development. 

Al-Halqi praised Bin Yehya’s keen efforts aiming at consolidating cooperation between the government and the organization, implementing many development projects in the country and providing humanitarian assistance, particularly within the ongoing crisis hitting Syria.

For his part, Bin Yehya commended the government’s support for FAO’s development activities in Syria, stressing that Syria has got rich natural and agricultural resources that have helped the country achieve self-sufficiency and food security to its people and export the surplus to foreign markets.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Subhi al-Abdulla.
