Germany Vows to Preserve Iran’s Nuclear Deal

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Saturday that the European states are doing their best to de-escalate tensions between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the US taking into account current sensitivities in the Middle East region.

Addressing a meeting in Baghdad, Maas underlined the importance of removing tensions and inviting all parties to maintain peace and exercise self-restraint.

He added that miscalculations, misunderstandings and provocative acts will leave unpredictable consequences.

Escalation of tensions over the past few weeks has made European countries to take action in order to remove misunderstandings and tensions, he noted.

He went on to say that Iran’s nuclear deal is worth attempting to be preserved.

Maas is slated to hold meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi and President Barham Salih to find ways out of current critical conditions.

According to Germany foreign ministry, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are slated to hold a meeting in Tehran on Monday.

Referring to Maas’ regional tour, the German Foreign Ministry said that he is to hold meeting with Zarif in Tehran on Monday.

Maas’ visit is an indication of the decision made by Berlin, Paris and London for preserving Iran’s nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Attaching the importance of Iran’s nuclear deal, Maas is to hold consultations on security and stability of the region.

Earlier, in an interview with IRNA, Abbas Mousavi said, “the German Foreign Minister will meet with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and President Hassan Rouhani, during his one-day tour to Iran.

The spokesman also said that bilateral relations between Iran and Germany, regional and international developments and Iran’s nuclear deal, are among the topics to be discussed during his trip to Iran.
