German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said during her visit to Damascus that reconciliation in Syria is now required to turn people’s hopes and expectations into reality.
“We call on everyone to exercise restraint and not undermine internal Syrian reconciliation,” she added.
Baerbock went on to say that foreign intervention in Syria has brought nothing but chaos in the past, and the country’s future must be decided by the Syrians themselves and through their sovereign decision”.
She considered that the task of the Syrian transitional government under the leadership of President Ahmad al-Sharaa will be difficult, but that effective transitional justice is essential in the country.
She noted that the historic agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces in the northeast of the country demonstrates that a unified Syria can become a reality.
