German Foreign Minister Expresses “Concerns” about Escalation of Situation in Northern Syria

BERLIN, (ST)- German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has stressed the need to focus on the process of attaining security and stability in Syria through political efforts.

Deutsche Welle website quoted the German top diplomat as saying that “after the success achieved in the fight against Daesh terrorist organization, Syria needs other steps to realize peace and stability, because military confrontation is the last thing Syria needs”.

 “All efforts should focus on the goal of achieving progress in the political course,” Sigmar said, pointing out that this issue will top the agenda of the next round of Vienna talks on Syria due to be on Thursday and Friday this week.

Commenting on the Turkish aggression on the Syrian city of Afrin, Sigmar said “we are concerned about what is going on in northern Syria”.

Spokesman of the German Foreign Ministry  said that “Foreign Minister Gabriel just telephoned his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu and made clear his concerns about an escalation of the situation in northern Syria and the possible humanitarian impact on the civilian population,”.

Both officials agreed that the political process on Syria should now be continued in an intensive manner, the spokesman said.

The Turkish regime launched a new brutal aggression on the Syrian sovereignty by bombarding several villages and towns that belong to Afrin city in Aleppo countryside with different kinds of weapon. The shelling led to the martyrdom of several civilians and caused huge damage to houses and properties.
