G B beat Bosnia in Fed Cup

Anne Keothavong and Heather Watson helped Great Britain get their Fed Cup campaign off to a winning start with victory over Bosnia.

Keothavong beat Dea Herdzelas 6-4 6-2 while Watson eased to a 6-3 6-4 win over Anita Husaric to ensure the team made the perfect start to their Europa/Africa Zone Group I matches in Israel.

Laura Robson and Johanna Konta later completed a whitewash, beating Jelena Simic and Jasmina Kajtazovic 6-0 6-0 in the doubles rubber, according to Skysport.

GB, whose opening tie had been held over from Wednesday due to rain, are looking to become one of two teams who will progress from Europe/Africa Zone Group I.

In order to do so, they need to top Group B, which also includes Portugal and Hungary, and then win a play-off. GB’s second match will be against Portugal on Friday.

Keothavong and Watson ensured they moved a step closer to achieving their aim.

British number four Keothavong, 29, took a tight first set against Herdzelas, serving out at 5-4 despite falling 0-30 down before easing to victory courtesy of breaks in games three and seven of the second set.

A double break of serve gave 20-year-old British number one Watson the first set in her match with Husaric and another break in the final game of the second set saw her claim victory.

Keothavong’s appearance was her 39th in the Fed Cup taking her into second place in GB’s all-time appearance list in the competition, with only Virginia Wade having represented her country in more ties.
