New York (ST): The Group of 77 and China called on the international community to take immediate and effective measures to put an end to the unilateral coercive measures being imposed on the developing countries which have negative impact on the ability of these states to confront the catastrophic consequences of the spread of the Corona virus pandemic.
In a statement released today, G77 and China affirmed that the unilateral coercive measures would have negative impact on the ability of states to respond competently, especially regarding medical equipment required to deal with the pandemic, noting that these measures also negatively affect international cooperation and solidarity which should prevail at this critical stage.
The statement reiterated that the G 77 and China are working not to allow any distinction between peoples or individuals regarding Covid 19, affirming that this is the appropriate time for the international community, the developing and developed countries to work together and prove ability to alleviate the consequences of the pandemic and build up the prosperous society for humanity.
The statement welcomed the launching of a UN Fund for enhancing health systems and helping the poorest population all over the world, referring to the necessity of increasing the exchange of information and technology to prevent the pandemic and combat it.
The statement also highlighted the crucial role played by the World Health Organization in responding to the pandemic and alleviating its consequences.
On March 26 Permanent representatives of eight countries to the UN, among them Syria’s Permanent Representative, Bashar al-Jaafari, called for lifting the coercive unilateral measures, indicating that these measures constitute a challenge in facing the crisis caused by the spread of Corona virus epidemic.
