French School in Damascus launches reading initiative

The French ‘Charles de Gaulle’ School in Damascus has launched an initiative called ‘hand-in-hand for reading’.

The initiative launched  by the school principals is a cultural bridge between students and their parents and it enhances relation between the school and the family in the field of reading printed books.

Mrs. FadiaFattoh, the school’s principal, told the official news agency (SANA) that the students themselves equipped and decorated a library that includes books, paintings and art works made by them to create a suitable climate for daily reading.

over 500 titles of books on Syria’s civilization plus books in English, French and Arabic are exposed in the school’s library.

Head of the School’s Council Mr. Michel Lobrit clarified that the initiative aims to enhance the students’ awareness about books’ content in order to have readers, who are able to understand what they are reading in all fields.

“The initiative boosts links between the generation of parents and grandparents on the one hand and the grandchildren on the other,”  he added, indicating that book gives the new generation a chance for communication and collective thinking.

Mr. Lobrit, in addition, stressed that he has not left Syria despite the war being launched on the country, hoping that the French cultural center will be reopened.

“The Arab culture in Syria has attracted the French people, especially the intellectuals,” he concluded.

In September 2008, the French school was opened in Damascus and it was hit by a mortar round –fired by terrorists- on December 1st 2013.
