France’s Support for Terrorists in Syria Was a Mistake

PARIS, (ST)-The French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has stressed that her country’s support for terrorists in Syria, described by Paris as “moderate opposition”, was a mistake and so was France’s decision to close the French Embassy in Damascus.

Addressing a group of her supporters in a press conference on Friday, Le Pen said ” the enemies of our enemies are our friends and President Bashar Al-Assad is the enemy of Daesh terror group.”

She expressed her support for the policy of non interference in others’ affairs, pointing out that “some in France are dreaming of colonial interventionist policies”.

She went on to say that “France has waged wars with which it had nothing to do like the French military intervention in Libya which led to the rise of extremists.”

“All knew that Libya was the gate of immigrants into Europe, yet we went there and waged a war,” she added, calling for a realistic French foreign policy.

On Tuesday, Le Pen stressed that France’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with Syria was a grave mistake, vowing to restore ties with Syria if she becomes a president.

“President Bashar Al-Assad was proved to be the only one who managed to resist extremism, the danger from which the French people are currently suffering,” Le Pen told the Lebanese L’Orient Le Jour newspaper, adding that several countries including France have tried to weaken President Al-Assad.

“If I win the elections and become the President of France I will support President Al-Assad in his struggle against fundamentalists,”Le Pen said, according to the Syrian news Agency SANA.

Elsewhere in her remarks, Le Pen criticized the European Union, describing it as “bad bankrupt system” and she stressed that it has proved its failure.
