Forthcoming Geneva Talks Aim to Know Chances of Achieving Progress in Syria Political Settlement

MUNICH – UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura affirmed on Sunday that the upcoming talks in Geneva on Syria aim to find out if there was an opportunity to make progress in the political settlement of the crisis.

“Astana is the only place for the cessation of hostilities and Geneva is to find out if there is any space for political discussion,” de Mistura said at the Munich Security Conference,  according to SANA.

He said the Geneva talks would be based on U.N. Security Council resolution 2254.

 “We have been supporting the meetings in Astana on Syria, of course based on the assumption that they are surgical and laser-beamed on a very important issue — establishing, stabilizing, reinforcing the cessation of hostilities plus confidence-building measures, which means for instance humanitarian access, which by the way is not taking place at the moment,” de Mistura said.

He hoped that the Geneva talks will succeed, adding that “the latest ceasefire is holding more than previous ones.”

He pointed out that Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization was “a spoiling element” to all agreements, noting that al-Nusra and ISIS terrorist organizations are enemies to everyone.
