HAVANA,(ST)_ Former Cuban President Fidel Castro stressed that he does not trust the United States, but nevertheless he does not reject rapprochement with it.
AFP quoted Castro as saying in a televised message yesterday addressed to the Students’ Union and was read over via the state television, “I do not trust the policy of the United States and did not talk with them, but this does not mean at any time , that it is a rejection of a peaceful resolution for conflicts.”
“The Cuban president has taken action consistent with his mandate,” Fidel Castro said adding “we will always stand up for cooperation and friendship among all peoples of the world, including our political opponents.”
Fidel Castro, aged 88 , who gave up power in 2006 for health reasons , expressed support for the policies pursued by his successor, Raul Castro towards Washington after the historic announcement on 17 December for a gradual normalization of relations between the two countries.
