Foreign Policy magazine: Washington failed to mobilize most countries against Russia

The American magazine Foreign Policy considered that the failure of the United States in its attempts to mobilize the world against Russia under the pretext of defending democracy after the Russian special military operation in Ukraine is due to the fact that its own democracy has become full of flaws and disease.

The American magazine indicated in an article entitled “Why did Biden’s democratic campaign against Putin fail” that while the recent developments in Ukraine seemed an ideal justification for US President Joe Biden to launch his campaign to spread global democracy and to portray the matter before public opinion as a brave democracy fighting tyranny, the following months proved the failure of this plan.

The magazine pointed out that much of the rest of the world simply was not convinced by Biden’s deteriorating democracy and because the United States, the preaching country, is a deeply broken democracy and must first heal itself.

The magazine pointed out that during the United States (ASEAN) summit held in Washington between May 12 and 13, most countries made clear their unwillingness to get involved in the conflict over Ukraine. Indonesia, a democratic country and a prominent member of ASEAN, invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the Group of Twenty summit, which it will host next November. The ASEAN countries also joined countries across the Middle East, South Asia, Latin America and Africa, which expressed their dissatisfaction with the separation of Russia, the main source of oil and gas supplies in the world, from the global system.

The magazine quoted Chas Freeman Jr., a former senior US diplomat, as saying that the United States must work hard to restore its credibility in the wake of its recent violations of international standards, including the use of torture and the invasion of Iraq.
