Foreign Deplores the EU Statement on Presidential Elections: Flagrant Violation of International Law

Damascus, (ST) -The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has regretted the EU statement about the presidential election that took place in Syria.

In a statement yesterday, the ministry said it “deplores the EU statement about the presidential election that took place in Syria, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, provides for respect sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs”, noting that this position is contrary to the rules of democracy and respect for people’s right to choose their leadership and decide their own future through the ballot box as the real legitimacy derived exclusively from the will of people. “

The ministry said that “the intensive turnout of the Syrians at home and abroad to cast their vote is the biggest proof of the credibility of the elections, a fact confirmed by the delegations that accompanied these elections,” noting that countries that participated in shedding the blood of the Syrian people and the destruction of their achievements and legacy and worked to foil the political process are the last to talk about their commitment to the Syrian people. “

“The Syrians who have been challenging for more than three years, the global war against their country valiantly, and voted intensively, are more determined to uphold national sovereignty and the independent national decision. “

However, the EU foreign affairs commissioner Catherine Ashton preempted results of the presidential elections held in Syria by issuing a statement claiming that the elections are illegitimate.

Ashton claimed in its statement, without any logical authorization, that the elections “affect the political efforts to find a solution” to the crisis in Syria and she did not address the violations committed by many nations when prevented Syrians living on its territory from participating in the voting.
