Following the failed coup attempt in Bolivia, the Latin American and Caribbean Community calls for an emergency meeting
Xiomara Castro, President of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States CELAC, called on the member states of the group to an emergency meeting in the wake of the failed coup attempt in Bolivia.
Castro, the Honduran President, said: “I call for an emergency meeting of the heads of state of the member states of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States to condemn the fascism that threatens Bolivian democracy and respect for civil authority.”
The Honduran President added: “The military forces once again attempted to carry out a criminal coup,” Xiomara vioced “unconditional support for the Bolivian people and for President Luis Arce.”
For his part, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, in a statement issued from Paraguay, condemned the coup attempt in Bolivia, and said: “We will not tolerate any violation of the legitimate constitutional order in Bolivia.”
Bolivian soldiers withdrew from the front of the presidential palace in La Paz after they attempted last night with armored vehicles to storm the headquarters of President Luis Arce, who accused the army commander, General Juan Jose Zuniga, of carrying out a coup attempt. The Bolivian police arrested the army commander after the president dismissed him.
