NEW YORK, (ST)- The UN Chief Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said on Monday that the Constitutional Committee on Syria is expected to hold its first session on October 30th.
“On 30th of October, 2019, I intend to convene 150 Syrian men and women for the launch of the Syrian-led, Syrian-owned, credible, balanced and inclusive Constitutional Committee facilitated by the United Nations in Geneva,” he said at a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday, Itar Tass quoted Pedersen as saying.
The agreement on forming the constitutional committee is based on basic principles including respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity as well as commitment to the UN Charter and the Security Council resolutions. He pointed out that the results of the committee’s meetings will be put to popular referendum, stressing that this process would help in reaching a political solution to the crisis in Syria.
Pedersen also said that the presence of terrorist organizations in Idleb threatens other areas in Syria, affirming that need to facilitate the return of the Syrian refugees.
