First expanded meeting of the Constitutional Committee on Syria begins with the participation of the three member delegations

GENEVA, (ST)- The first enlarged meeting of the constitutional committee on Syria started at the UN headquarters in Geneva on Thursday with the participation of the three member delegations which  represent the Syrian government, the “opposition” and the civil society. The UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen attended the meeting.

SANA reporter said that today’s meeting was closed to the media outlets.

Activities of the Committee for Discussing the Syrian Constitution kicked off on Wednesday in Geneva with the participation of the 150 members.

 During the opening ceremony, head of the Syrian government side in the Constitutional Committee Ahmad Al- Kuzbari said “we reject any form of foreign interference in our internal affairs,” reiterating that the Syrian people have the exclusive right to determine the future of their country.

He pointed out that “the discussions we are conducting in Geneva are based on respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.”

On his part, Pedersen affirmed that launching the work of the Constitutional Committee is an important step towards finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria based on the UN resolution No. 2254.
