Finland and Sweden formally submit applications to join NATO

Brussels (ST):  Finland and Sweden have both formally applied to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

According to France-Press Agency, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg received requests from the ambassadors of Finland and Sweden for their countries’ membership in the alliance in Brussels.

The decision to accession was adopted yesterday by the Finnish Parliament by 188 votes to 8 against the accession and was approved by the government and President Sauli Niinistö.

Sweden also adopted the decision before it was officially submitted, while Russia announced that it would have to take compensatory measures and military technical responses to this step.
