The Finance Minister Mohamed Abazid today met with a delegation of the European Union mission to Syria, led by the mission’s charge d’affaires Michael Onmacht, and the French diplomat, Hélène Le Cal.
Discussions focused on ways to improve relations between Syria and the European Union and the necessity of lifting all sanctions imposed on Syria during the rule of the former regime.
During the meeting with the delegation, Minister Abazeed praised the good step taken by the European Union to suspend some provisions of the sanctions on Syria for a year. He called for progress in this regard to reach a complete lifting of sanctions on Syria permanently, especially those related to the financial, banking, oil and investment sectors.
The Finance Minister clarified that lifting all sanctions on Syria will open horizons for the flow of new investments to Syria, whether from the European Union or the rest of the world, and this will also reflect positively on the Syrian economy, and contribute to a large extent to improving the living conditions of the Syrian people.
Minister Abazeed called for unfreezing Syrian government assets in European banks, as all sanctions are no longer justified after the fall of the regime.
He expressed his hope for improving relations between Syria and Europe and for working to make the country a source of security and peace.
