Fighting Terrorism Requires Implementing Relevant International Resolutions, Abandoning Double Standards Policies

MOSCOW, (ST)- Fighting terrorism requires implementing relevant international legitimacy resolutions and adopting a just policy away from double standards, Syria’s Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Mahmoud Abdul Wahab Shawa has underscored.

In a statement at Moscow Sixth International Security Conference on Wednesday, Gen. Shawa said that fighting terrorism also needs taking viable procedures to uproot  terrorism, through eliminating domination policies, putting an end to colonialist expansion and to the use of terrorism as a political means, respecting other nationalities and cultures and adopting punitive measures against the countries that support, sponsor and fund terrorism.

“Today’s meeting is of great importance in terms of the urgent need to find successful means to combat terrorism and to work hard as  to halt its expansion and eliminate its causes as well as its disastrous repercussions,” Shawa said, stressing the need to enhance cooperation among all countries to eliminate terrorism which poses serious threat to the entire world.

He also affirmed the importance of adopting political, economic, cultural, media and security policies to prevent promoting the terrorist and extremist thinking.

He clarified that  the international community’s disability and lack of seriousness  to halt violations of international laws and conventions have helped spread international terrorism. Besides, he said, disagreement at the international level on clear definition of terrorism has paved the way for incubating and adopting terrorism by many of its operators, thereby, helping terrorist organizations move freely under a cover of legitimacy given by some certain powers.

Gen. Shawa asserted the importance of signing security agreements with neighboring countries to cooperate in fighting terrorism and exchanging information to enhance mutual security interests.

Syria calls on the international community to assume its moral and humanitarian responsibilities towards the Syrian people and the peoples entire region who suffer from the scourge of war, terrorism and systematic destruction of its history and civilization and to adopt punitive measures against the regimes and powers that support terrorism and give no heed to laws and moral principles, said Gen. Shawa.
