Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reiterated the need to preserve Syria’s unity and territorial integrity and lift the sanctions imposed on it. He emphasized that the new Syrian administration is acting with the utmost wisdom and caution during this phase.
In an exclusive interview with the Qatari newspaper Al-Sharq published today, Fidan said: Turkish policy toward Syria is based on preserving Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, achieving national reconciliation, cleansing the country of terrorist elements to ensure security and stability, and ensuring reconstruction through the lifting of sanctions.
He added: In this context, Turkey supports Syria, which has been given a ‘historic opportunity’ to achieve these goals.
After the fall of the (Assad) regime, our country made intensive efforts to develop interaction and mutual understanding between the Syrian administration and the countries of the region, primarily.
These efforts continued through contacts and meetings that included other important stakeholders, and support was provided to establish a sound relationship between the international community and the Syrian administration.
The Turkish Foreign Minister continued: The international community’s adoption of a similar stance is crucial to ensuring that Syria can overcome the challenges it faces.
He added: We welcome the international community’s increased engagement with the Syrian administration in this regard. We also welcome the steps taken to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria, which targeted the former Assad regime, and we hope these efforts will continue.
Fidan expressed his country’s satisfaction with the policy adopted by the new Syria, saying: We note that the Syrian administration is acting with the utmost wisdom and caution during this phase, and looking at its performance over the past five months, we see that it has taken important steps.
He recalled the organization of the National Dialogue Conference and the issuance of the Constitutional Declaration, which “will ensure a comprehensive transitional process.
Fidan concluded: Finally, the transitional government has begun to exercise its duties, and we hope that the People’s Assembly will be successfully established to begin legislative activities.
