Failing to meet public demands led to Morsi downfall: Iran MP

A senior Iranian lawmaker says the ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi’s failure to meet public demands was the main reason for his downfall, according to Press TV.

Member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Esmail Kowsari said Saturday that Morsi’s wrong and ill-timed decision-making in some of the issues led to his removal from office.

“People, who were supporting Morsi, wanted him to sever relations with the United States and Zionist regime [of Israel], but he pursued a different path,” the lawmaker added.

On Wednesday, Egypt’s army chief ousted Morsi, who took office in June 2012, and dissolved the country’s constitution after millions of people protested his leadership.

General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said that new parliamentary elections would be held, and declared head of Supreme Constitutional Court Adli Mansour as the caretaker leader. Mansour has dissolved the parliament and appointed the new head of the general intelligence.

Morsi is reportedly being held “preventively” by the military. Senior army officials say he might face formal charges over accusations made by his opponents. Several arrest warrants have been issued for members of Morsi’s “Muslim Brotherhood” party.

Thirty people were killed and over 300 injured across Egypt on Friday in clashes between opponents and supporters of Morsi and in clashes between pro-Morsi protesters and security forces, according to Egyptian Health Ministry officials.
