PRAGUE, (ST) – Former UN General Assembly President, Jan Kavan, called on Friday for not ignoring the involvement of extremist groups ” jihadists and al-Qaeda” in the fighting in Syria.
Interviewed by the Czech Halo Noviny Newspaper, Kavan made it clear that these groups are not interested in any democratic issue.
“the paradoxical here is that some of the western countries are currently supporting these groups which have previously participated in 2001 World Trade Center attack in New York,”Kavan affirmed.
” the best solution to the crisis in Syria is through the UN proposing a political solution that stresses the need for respecting the Syrians’ rights and guaranteeing these rights, then to persuade the Syrian government and opposition to negotiate on its proposal,” asserted Kavan.
“Qatar and Saudi Arabia should halt their support to the armed groups in Syria,”Kavan concluded.
