Extremism Threat to Global Peace, Says Zarif

 

Tehran – Interference in the internal affairs of other countries and extremism represent threats to global peace as well as solidarity among members of the Non-Aligned Movement, Iranian foreign minister says.

Mohammad Javad Zarif made the remarks in the opening speech of the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement on Thursday.

Today, interference in other counties’ internal affairs as well as occupation and extremism has not only resulted in unprecedented threats against world development, security and peace but also unfortunately, it has exposed to risk the solidarity among NAM member states, Zarif said.

He urged the need for restraint to be exercised by the countries in the face of global challenges and difficult situation and their adherence to the Charter of the United Nations as well as the international rules and regulations.

 

Violent extremism and terrorism and their unpleasant consequences including the growing conflicts and humanitarian crises are threats which demand serious attention by the NAM member states, Zarif added.

Iranian foreign minister also congratulated Venezuelan nation and government on assuming the NAM rotating presidency.

He also hailed the theme of “Peace, Sovereignty and Solidarity for Development” for 17th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit.

The ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement, headed by Iran’s minister of foreign affairs has taken place in Venezuela.

Foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement member states attended the meeting held on Margarita Island the largest island in the Venezuelan state of Nueva Esparta.

The Islamic Republic of Iran assumed the rotating presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in 2012 for a four-year term during 16th NAM Summit in Tehran.

Salehi, Moghirini discuss JCPOA implementation

In another development in Vienna, Ali Akbar Salehi Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization met on Thursday with Federica Mogherini High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the two discussed implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

According to the European Union Website, during their meeting, took place in Brussels, Salehi and Mogherini urged the two sides commitment to fully fulfill their JCPIOA obligations and help safeguard the process of implementation of the nuclear deal between Iran and G5+1.

The two officials also emphasized providing what is needed to open up Iran’s business environment to the global markets and also paving the way for the European investors to engage with Iran.

Salehi and Mogherini also discussed regional crises and stressed the reestablishment of stability and security.
