EU renews call for immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza

Madrid (ST) – EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, renewed his call today for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza, considering the repeated Israeli aggression against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) unacceptable.

Agence France-Presse quoted Borrell as saying during a meeting of the countries of the Union for the Mediterranean in Barcelona, Spain: “The EU calls for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and the implementation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions,” considering the Israeli army’s attacks on UNIFIL facilities and personnel to be completely unacceptable.

On the other hand, Borrell called for an end to the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip as well, especially in its north, where it is facing the worst humanitarian crisis, saying that: “The way in which this war is being waged against civilians raises serious concerns and raises many unanswered questions.”

He called on the countries of the Union for the Mediterranean to commit to pressing for an end to this tragic situation.

In the same context, Spain and Lebanon called today for a permanent and immediate ceasefire in the region.
