EU policies encourage extremism and spread of terrorism in ME, says Foreign Ministry

DAMASCUS,(ST)_Foreign and Expatriates Ministry has criticized the outcomes of the EU Foreign Ministers’ Council during the meeting held in Luxembourg  on October 20th  on Syria and Iraq.

The ministry said in a statement released Thursday that the EU Foreign Ministers’ council’s hostile outcomes are full of contradictions and has nothing to do with what is going on in Syria and Iraq.

“They [outcomes] represent a flagrant intervention in internal affairs of Syria and Iraq and reflect colonialist heritage of some European states,” the statement read.

It asserted that some European states in cooperation with Turkey and underdeveloped Arab regimes in the region have supported the armed terrorist groups operating in Syria and Iraq.

The ministry added that  the EU Foreign Ministers have to respect the UN relevant resolutions including resolutions No.2170 and No.2178 before calling on other states to do that. “The European policies have encouraged extremism and the spread of terrorism and unrest in the Middle east.”

Mockery

“Talking about democracy by European state became a matter of mockery as most of these states pant after investments and enjoy relations with states that breach human rights and democracy principles in the Middle East and the World, in particular with some Gulf states,” the ministry said.

It made clear that the EU which mistakenly brags of imposing economic sanctions on independent and sovereign states, including Syria -that is defending its people’s dignity- knows well that such sanctions affect but innocent citizens. “This proves the partnership between the European states and armed terrorist organizations, including the IS, al-Nusra Front and other organizations linked to al-Qaeda, in practicing terror against the Syrian people.”

The ministry underscored that Syria condemns the EU policies, noting that the EU has lost its credibility because it went far away from the international legitimacy, the UN charter and the international human law.

“The EU does not respond to the European people’s concerns over the return of terrorism to their states,” the ministry said in the statement.

It affirmed that Syria will never succumb to dictations from any side.

“The Syrian people’ interests, dignity, sovereignty and independence will be the only reference for Syria’s policies,” the ministry concluded.
