Ending the Corona pandemic requires vaccinating 70% of the world’s population, says WHO

Geneva, (ST) – The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr.Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stressed that ending the Coronavirus pandemic “requires vaccinating 70 percent of the world’s population,” again calling for an end to the nationalism of vaccines.

Tedros said in an article in the Russian newspaper Izvestia that “ending the Corona pandemic requires that all countries achieve through joint action until mid-2022 the global goal of vaccinating 70 percent of the world’s population”.

Tedros indicated that more than 8.5 billion doses of vaccines have been injected so far, and thanks to this, millions of lives have been saved, pointing out that new methods of treatment have also been developed, which allows for a significant reduction in death rates.

He warned that the longer the principle of equitable access to vaccines continues to be violated, and the higher the risk that the virus will continue to mutate without being able to predict or thwart these changes, we will not be able to end the pandemic.

Since January 2020, the world has been facing a chronic health crisis caused by the Coronavirus, “Covid 19”, which has led to huge losses in many sectors of the economy, especially transportation, tourism and entertainment and the collapse of global stock exchanges.
