Egypt is reevaluating ties with Syria, says Fahmy

Cairo, (ST)-Egypt’s new foreign minister said Saturday that Cairo is reevaluating its relationship with Syria following  the ousted president Mohammad Morsi.

In his first public comments since becoming Egypt’s top diplomat, Nabil Fahmy stressed that political solution is the only solution that preserves Syria’s sovereignty and the Syrian state, hoping  that a move regarding this matter  will be at hands in the coming weeks.

Fahmy’s comments signaled a shift from Morsi’s approach .

“Egypt is seeking a political solution to the crisis in Syria. Egypt supports the Syrian people’s right to live in freedom and democracy without discrimination between classes, sects, political or religious affiliations, “underscored Fahmy.

The Egyptian diplomat underlined  that the consulates between Syria and Egypt are still on duty.

In response to the calls previously made by Morsi for Egyptians to go and fight in Syria,Fahmy

affirmed that there is “no intention for Jihad in Syria,”.

“we are neither enemies nor allies with anybody,”Fahmy said of Cairo’s ties with other nations.
