Earthquake is an opportunity for the world to pay further attention to the situation in Syria: ICRC

Iman Traboulsi, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for Near and Middle East has called on the world to reconsider its approach on the humanitarian situation in Syria, and to find root and long-term solutions to this situation, noting the negative impacts of the unilateral coercive Western measures imposed on the Syrian people, especially after the recent earthquake that hit Syria and caused hundreds of casualties and massive destruction.

In a statement to Sputnik, Traboulsi said “root solutions by influential humanitarian parties can’t be attained except if we have the initiative to provide immediate relief aid and have ability to propose long-term projects, particularly in the filed of protecting and rehabilitating the basic infrastructure”.

“The recent earthquake is an opportunity for the world to again pay attention to the humanitarian situation in Syria, as we believe that the sanctions mainly affect the Syrian citizens and their inability to access the simplest services, and this was the situation before the earthquake,” she added.

“The difficult economic circumstances as well as the western sanctions have increased the Syrians’ problems and affected the ability of the influential humanitarian players to do their relief and humanitarian work according to their vision,” she clarified.
