Earthquake death toll rises to 65 in China’s Sichuan

Beijing, (ST) – The death toll from yesterday’s 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan Province, southwest China, has risen to 65.

Xinhua quoted local authorities as saying that 37 people were killed in Ganzi Tibetan prefecture, 28 others in Ximian county, Yan city, 12 missing, 170injured in Ganzi and 78 others in Ximian county.

Sichuan provincial authorities have activated the highest level of emergency response to the earthquake.

An earlier death toll from the earthquake indicated that 21 people had died.
