Dr. Bojeirami, genius mind and remarkable achievements

Dr. Mohammad Tawfik al-Bojeirami passed away last week aged 75 leaving behind great and rich legacy in various domains.  He was one of the very original minds who achieved remarkable accomplishments in various literary and journalistic spheres.  His manners were those of a gentleman, and his eyes were always full of intelligence. Throughout a long and eventful career that extended for more than half a century, Dr. Bojeirami constituted an inexhaustible source of inspiration for his colleagues and students.

The genius character of the late al-Bojeirami has appeared in several domains. As a skilful translator, he translated more than 13 books from Arabic into English and vice versa varying between politics and literature.

In the history of Syrian TV, he will hold a certain position and a high place. His character and achievements were great and indubitable. As a journalist, he started working in the Syrian radio and TV in 1966 and remained as an example of a successful editor and presenter who left lasting imprints through his various programs, the most famous was “Comic Stories form the World” which achieved wide popularity not only in Syria but throughout the Arab world due to the special way of presenting that distinguished Dr. Bojeirami from others. The program was first transmitted on Syrian TV in 1966 and lasted until 1971. It was resumed in 1980 following the return of the late Dr. Bojeirami from Sheffield where he completed post graduate studies. He also worked as a chief editor of news bulletins from 1966 to 2013. 

As a chief editor of “The Resistance Magazine”, Dr. Bojeirami greatly contributed to promoting the awareness of people towards the just cause of his people. He made up brilliant articles and reviews that disclosed the racist Zionist policies and sinister schemes that aim to perpetuate the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories.

The Syrian and Arab people have also known Dr. Bojeirami as a talented actor who played roles in historical drama, especially TV and radio series that shed light on outstanding Arab literary figures.

Born in Palestine in 1938, the late al-Bojeirami obtained the Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Sheffield, the UK in 1980. Earlier, he got the MA in African Literature in 1974 from the same university.

Following his return, he worked in teaching poetry, literary criticism, translation and comparative literature at the Department of English Language at Damascus University. He also supervised several MA and Ph.D. theses.

Dr. Bojeirami’s death constitutes a grave loss for Syrian and Arab people nationwide and he will always remain alive in the hearts and minds of Syrian and Arab people.
