Dr. Najah Al-Attar, the Vice President of the Republic and the President of the Damascus Arabic Language Complex, mourned the loss of the scholar Dr. Marwan Al-Mahasni, who passed away today at the age of 96.
She wrote: “The owner of the brilliant thought, unique pen, high morals, and great potential has passed away.. Dr. Al-Mahasni was not only a doctor or a surgeon, but he was a prominent linguist with a pen glowing in his hands with brilliance, knowledge, elegance of letter, and deep thoughts”.
“He was talking to me on the phone from day to day, and I did not think that death would take him from us so quickly.. It is the inevitable fate,” She went on to say.
Dr. Al-Atrar offered condolences to the wife, sons, relatives, and friends of the deceased intellectuals, academics, and writers, praying to God to give them the ability to be patient and endure the tragedy of loss.
She concludes by praying to God to have mercy on the deceased and makes his place in Paradise with his meritorious work, confirming that his legacy would remain immortal.
The late Dr. Mahasni, who was born in Damascus in 1926, held a degree in medicine from the University of Damascus in 1951. He got a degree in surgery in 1955 from the University of Paris and a Professorship in medical sciences from the same university in 1962, and a bachelor of arts from the University of Damascus in 1958.
Mahasni held many positions, as he was a member of the Societies of Respiratory Diseases in Paris and of the Chest Surgery in England.
He was also a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and occupied the positions of teacher, assistant professor and professor. He was also the Head of the Department of Surgery at Damascus University Faculty of Medicine and was one of the founders of the University’s Supreme Council for Science.
Al-Mahasni became a member of the Arabic Language Complex in 1979 in Damascus and served as deputy of the head of the Arabic Language Complex between 2005 and 2008 then he became head of the Complex until his death.
The late represented Syria in the Committee on Dialogue among Civilizations of the 1974 Federation of French-speaking Universities. He also chaired the Committee on Dialogue among Civilizations and was a member of the Federation’s Board of Directors between 1979 and 1995.
He has dozens of scientific research published in medical journals, in addition to his participation in the classification of the Unified Medical Dictionary (English. Arabic), the Unified Medical Dictionary, (Arabic. French. English), and the dictionary of Italian in Arabic.
In addition to his proficiency in Arabic, the late thinker was fluent in many languages such as French, English, Italian, and Spanish.
