DPRK: Guterres’ statements destroy the international community’s confidence in the United Nations

The DPRK strongly condemned the remarks of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on its nuclear program, stressing that it adopts double standards and destroys the international community’s trust in the UN.

“The Secretary-General of the United Nations has not got rid of the outdated, biased and selfish  way of thinking about the current situation on the Korean Peninsula,” the KCNA news agency quoted Director of the International Organizations Department of the DPRK’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jo ChulSoo, as saying in a statement.

Jo Chul Soo added: “If Guterres understands that a United Nations member state’s strengthening of its defense capabilities is a violation of international law, then he must first and foremost object to Japan’s ambition to become a military giant, and explain why the United States, the world’s largest nuclear power and the largest military spender, receives special treatment outside framework of principles of the United Nations”.

He regretted that Guterres blamed the DPRK, ignoring the US stockpiling of weapons, including all means of nuclear strikes, on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, thus increasing regional tensions.

He pointed out that Japan has no moral or legal position to be part of the UN Security Council, due to its colonial past.

He renewed his call on the Secretary-General of the United Nations to look at the situation on the Korean Peninsula on the basis of impartiality and objectivity in accordance with his mission outlined in the Charter, stressing that his country will not give up its defensive nuclear weapons.
