The DGAM’s Director General Maamoun Abdul Karim has declared that the photos received after the Syrian army restored peace and stability to the 16th-centuary Palmyra citadel show that the main structure of the citadel stayed intact.
He added that there are damages inside the Palmyra citadel [also known as the Arabian citadel and the Fakhr-al-Din al-Maani castle]resulted from ISIS destructive acts.” The Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums has a well-qualified cadres to rehabilitate the citadel.”
Maamoun talked about a plan to send archaeologists to the ancient Palmyra city after recapturing it by the Syrian army in order to assess the scale of damages in order to rehabilitate the historic sites under scientific supervision of the UNESCO.
Two days ago the Syrian army recaptured Palmyra citadel from the ISIS terrorists and dismantled explosive devices the terrorists planted before driving them out of it.
In this context, the Syrian Television channel confirmed that Syrian army engaged in fierce clashes against ISIS terrorists inside Palmyra city.
The Sputnik news website published a video footage showing the city of Palmyra, including the archeological ruins- theater, agora, tetrapylon, the 1-1-km great colonnade- which look in a good condition.

Since the ISIS invasion of the ancient city of Palmyra in May 2015, media reports confirmed that ISIS destroyed many significant landmarks in the city- the arch of triumph, the Baal Shamin temple, the Sella of Bel Temple and several tower tombs.
