Del Ponte: Terrorist Acts by Extremist groups, foreign Mercenaries cause Great Suffering for the Syrian People

GENEVA,(ST)_ Member of the UN International Inquiry Commission on Syria Carla Del Ponte stressed that the terrorist acts carried out by extremist groups in Syria, such as ” al-Nusra Front, the state of Iraq and the Levant” and foreign mercenaries, who kill, torture and besiege cities, cause great suffering for the Syrian people, that no one can endure.

In interview with Itar-Tass today De Ponte said that “the spread of radical terrorist groups seeking to establish an Islamic state in Syria continues to increase, reaching far about 700 groups, but with no unified command for them.”

Del Ponte noted that a large number of foreign mercenaries and extremists have joined those terrorist groups in Syria with the goal to establish “an Islamic caliphate,” a matter which has fueled the crisis and blocked the access of humanitarian aids to those in need.

However, terrorism sponsoring countries in Syria, particularly the United States, France, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, continue, in clear violation of the UN Security Council resolutions on counter-terrorism support for these terrorists mercenaries by facilitating their recruitment and transfer to Syria through the territories of Syria’s neighboring countries, as well as the establishment of training camps and providing them with financial, military and intelligence support.

“Everything that happens in Syria will reflect negatively and significantly on the civilian population”, Del Ponte stressed, adding that “ the crisis is heated up continuously and,no one pays any attention to civilians.”

Ironically, U.S. President Barack Obama yesterday vowed to continuously provide support to terrorists in Syria at the time, he declared his intention to face the terrorists in northern Iraq.
