Defense Minister receives congratulatory phone call on Palmyra victory from Iranian counterpart

Damascus – Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Army and the Armed Forces, Minister of Defense Lt. Gen. Fahd Jassem al-Freij received a phone call from his Iranian counterpart congratulating the people and government of Syria on the army’s victory at Palmyra, SANA reported.

Al-Freij expressed to Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehghan his thanks to the Iranian government and armed forces for their support to Syria in the fight against terrorism.

He said the support of Syria’s friends, especially Iran, has played an essential role in defeating ISIS terrorists in Palmyra, which the Syrian army restored security to two days ago.

Retaking Palmyra, he added, is a major step on the way of achieving final victory in the fight against Takfiri terrorism and its sponsors and backers.

The Iranian Defense Minister, for his part, affirmed that Iran will continue supporting Syria in the struggle against terrorism, saying the victory at Palmyra came as the result of the unity and steadfastness of the people, government, armed forces and popular defense groups in Syria.
