De Mistura: Only Syrian-Led Political Solution Can Lead to Sustainable End to Crisis

GENEVA, (ST) – Spokesman of the UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has stressed that an inclusive and Syrian-led political solution to the crisis in Syria is urgently needed.

 “Only a Syrian-led and owned political solution can address the aspirations of the Syrian people and end the crisis in a sustainable manner,” Mistura’s spokesman said.

 The UN News center quoted the spokesman as saying in a statement yesterday that de Mistura said “there is a general consensus that there can be no military solution to the crisis in Syria.”

The statement pointed out that “it is the responsibility of all influential Syrian, regional and international actors to bring that day forward and to make every effort to protect civilians under any circumstances and at all times.”

De Mistura continues to hold meetings with concerned Syrian, regional and international interlocutors as part of the ongoing Geneva consultations aiming to attain a peaceful settlement in the country.
