DAMASCUS,(ST)_Syria has appealed to the UN Security council to fulfill its role in preventing a plot that aims at making the Middle East region free of Christian community.
Foreign and expatriates Ministry made the appeal in a letter sent on Monday to the UNSC on daily attacks being launched by foreign-backed terrorist groups against the densely Christian residential areas in the country, according to the official news agency.
The letter made it clear that al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups randomly fire mortars on residential areas and explode car bombs nationwide according to Fatawa issued by some sheikhs living in Qatar and Saudi Arabia to foment sedition in the country.
It noted that several churches in Maalola, Sadad and Der Ateyeh areas outside Damascus and Homs were looted and destroyed recently.
The letter underscored that the extremist terrorist groups systematically work within a plot targeting Christians in the whole region in general and in Syria in particular.
“Syria, the cradle of monotheistic religions, is facing a barbaric war being waged by extremist and Takfiri gangs to undermine the country’s civilization,” the letter said, noting that extremism is being escalated in several countries in the region.
The ministry expressed consternation at inaction of the countries that claim concern about the Syrian people, adding that some countries – mainly Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and France- support the terrorist groups-operating in Syria- by all means to go ahead with their crimes against citizens and to facilitate the displacement of the citizens from Syria to be settled abroad.
It stressed that the Syrian state is keen on practicing its constitutional duty in protecting its citizens –Muslims and Christians- from the armed terrorist groups’ crimes.
Combating terrorism ‘crucial’
Moreover, the ministry said that combating terrorism is crucial for the success of any peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria and to give credibility to the political process.
It called on the UNSC to fulfill its role in preventing the plot that aims at making the ME region free of Christians and warning against the grave consequences of such a plot on the national unity and security in several countries in the region.
