Damascus deserves to be called the “City of Jasmine”: Czech website

Damascus is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world and it is older even than legends themselves and it deserves to be called “the City of Jasmine”, a report published by the Czech website “Negida” has stressed.

Damascus is known for the name “the City of Jasmine” as the yards of all the Damascene houses are decorated with plants and trees, especially Jasmine.

The report contained seven images for key sites in Damascus.

“Besides being the oldest inhabited city in history on earth whose rich history goes back to thousands of years, Damascus constitutes a cultural and religious center in the East Mediterranean region,” the report said.

The report talked in details about the history and the civilization of the city and its seven gates, the oldest of which is Bab Sharqi.

The report quoted the British historian Hilaire Belloc as saying that “Damascus is a symbol of the permanent physical conditions that run throughout history.”
