DAMASCUS, (ST)- Damascus Citadel is currently hosting a portrait sculpture competition for Syrian young sculptors, within the framework of the Syrian Plastic Art Days.
21 graduates of the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Applied Arts Institute are taking part in this cultural contest, which aims at supporting young artists and highlighting their talents and creativity.
With their portraits, the young artists embodied different human expressions, using clay to reflect their different visions and styles.
Prominent Syrian sculptor Aktham Abdel Hamid, the supervisor of the competition, told SANA that the 3-day event is very important for supporting young sculptors and providing them with opportunities to express their talents and skills, indicating that a specialized committee will select the top three winners.
According to Abdel Hamid, the contest restores the active movement of the Syrian plastic art which prevailed in the country before the terrorist war on Syria .That was when the idea of field sculptural work appeared in the streets so that the Syrian public can know more about this art.
Director of the Applied Art Institute Waddah Salama, on his part, stressed his determination to make this competition an annual tradition that witnesses development every year.
Some of the participants spoke to SANA about their portraits which express their inner situation and feelings, hailing this contest as a positive step to exchange experiences and encourage the artists to develop their talents and create new ideas.
