Damascus Appeals for Stopping Politicizing Chemical File

DAMASCUS,(ST)_Syria has called for stopping politicizing its Chemical file and take the complicated security circumstances the country is going through into account.

The call was made in a letter sent by Foreign and Expatriates Ministry on Saturday to the United Nations Security Council about the outcome of the council’s meeting held on February 6th 2014 after a briefing given by Sigrid Kaag, the Special Coordinator of the joint mission of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

The ministry said that Syria was exposed to unjust campaign by some member states of the UNSC, on top of which is the United States and its allies, during the discussion of the Syrian chemical file in February 6th-meeting.

It clarified that those states turned a blind eye to Syria’s commitment to its obligations under the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Convention (PCWC) and to the current circumstances caused by the international and regional-backed terrorist war on the country.

Pressures

“The unjust campaign synchronized with the convention of the Geneva 2 meeting and Syria’s positive stances in the meeting… This clear-cut escalation is an evidence of putting pressures on Syria to produce an effect on the Geneva2 talks,” the ministry’s letter read.

It added: “Those states that accuse Syria of failing to be committed  have not carried out their obligations after destroying their chemical weapons arsenals despite the fact that 10 years have elapsed since the deadlines and there are no security circumstances in those states.”

Obstacles

The ministry asserted that the armed terrorist groups targeted the sites of Chemical weapons and the second cargo transfer on January 27, noting that many states refused to offer security equipment to Syria.

“Despite its humble capabilities, Syria bought some devices from nearby countries to implement measures related to transferring chemicals,” the ministry said.

Nonobjective charge

It affirmed Syria’s keenness to complete the process of transferring a big quantity of chemicals as soon as possible.

The ministry appealed to the international community to shoulder its responsibility with respect to providing help to Syria to overcome the serious challenges that trigger delay in transferring the chemicals instead of charging the Syrian government in a nonobjective way.
