“Damascene exhibition” shows the rich heritage of Damascus

“Damascene” is the title of exhibition which was held at the Arab Cultural Center of Mezza in Damascus.

27 artists from different generations depicted Damascene rich heritage through drawing silent nature, neighborhoods, old Damascene houses and others..

Najwa Al-Sharif, the organizer of the exhibition, said: “This event aims to preserve the Damascene  heritage in particular and the  Syrian one in general for future generations”. 

For his part, Nazir Al-Baroudi, who is a professional artist and has displayed 7 paintings, told Syria Times : I participated in this event with the young generation to encourage them and make them learn from our experience”.

“ My paintings show the old traditional crafts and they aim to  revive them through  drawing. I have also painted some gates of Damascus and its old neighborhood” Al-Baroudi  said.

 “Participating in such event is an opportunity to motivate me to continue drawing and to encourage  young artists to go on drawing” he added.

Artist Nazir hopes that such exhibitions would help keep the Syrian and Damascene heritage and to allow new generations to have an idea about it.

Artist Hanan Ibrahim, who participated in many collective exhibitions displayed one painting from the Syrian heritage using oil colors 

Hanan drew a licorice seller who is part of Damascene folklore . she sees that heritage is being saved  by generations through painting, and collective exhibition is an opportunity to learn from others experiences and to make others acquaint  with her paintings.

Artist Mutaz Al- Omari , another participant, said: “ The exhibition is about the heritage of Damascus. Every artist  dealt with the heritage using his/ her own style. I painted the Mawlawiyeh which Damascus is famous for.It is presented in religious occasions and reflects Sufism. I painted it in  expressiveness using acrylic colors.”

For his part, artist Muhammad Al- Trifi, who participated in many exhibitions inside Syria and abroad showed one painting that reflects the  Mawlawiyeh dancing.
