Current US Gov’t’s Policy of Maximum Pressure on Iran futile, Says UK Envoy

British ambassador to Tehran stated London’s disagreement with Washington over the JCPOA has already cost the UK a lot, adding that London made it clear to the government of Trump that the UK was sorry the US has left the deal and believes that the US current policy of maximum pressure on Iran does not work.

“When we signed the JCPOA, we just didn’t think that it would only help Iran,” British Ambassador to Tehran Rob Macaire said in an interview referring to the Iranian nuclear agreement and the Group 5 + 1. “In fact, Iran’s sides have established a diplomatic process to resolve the problems of the world.”

The British ambassador to Tehran went on to say, “The British government continues to be bound to implement the JCPOA, and contrary to the many people who have said that if the United States leaves, the UK also will leave but the UK government remains committed to it until Iran does not withdraw.

Referring to remarks made by the resigned British Prime Minister Theresa May that Britain’s policy was not to harm the JCPOA, he noted, “In order to maintain our trade relations with Iran, the EU has been pursuing ‘Blocking Statute’ for the US sanctions.”

Macaire pointed out, “The US withdrawal has had a lot of negative effects, and the European governments cannot fully compensate for these negative effects. What we are doing is that we are trying to ensure that Iran has the benefits that they have within the framework of the JCPOA.
